Wandering Hanoi

Wandering Hanoi | Trains, Cafes, Caves

Wandering Hanoi | A Travel Story from Suchi’s World

Some places ask you to plan. Hanoi asks you to feel.

I didn’t go to Hanoi with a list. I went with a vibe.

That first morning, I didn’t rush off to see the sights — I wandered through alleys where scooters swerved like water and the air smelled like coconut coffee and chili oil. A woman offered lotus tea with a shy smile. Somewhere in the chaos, the city whispered, “Go slow.”

And that’s how Hanoi unfolded.

I wasn’t checking boxes. I was chasing feelings.

🚂 When the Train Street Shook the Ground

No, it wasn’t scary. It was synchrony.

I went to Train Street at night — the crowd hushed as the rails began to buzz. A waiter gestured us all to step back with the grace of someone who’s done it a hundred times. And when that train passed, thundering inches from my face, the lanterns barely moved. Somehow, everything stayed exactly where it belonged.

Moments later, the street was a market again, soft with fairy lights and handmade magnets lined up on wooden trays.

☕ Coffee, But Make it Vietnamese

There’s something soulful about how the Vietnamese do coffee — with condensed milk, coconut, eggs even. And none of it feels trendy or try-hard. It’s culture, served cold or hot, often with jazz playing nearby and always in a cup that felt like it belonged in a dream.

🎭 A Theatre Where Water Dances

At the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, wooden puppets danced on water while musicians played instruments I’d never heard before. There were dragons. Laughter. Thunder from behind the curtains. I couldn’t tell what the story was, but it didn’t matter — it was pure magic.

🍜 You Can’t Not Mention Pho

Whether it was the tofu pho in a family-run shack or a bowl of chicken pho from a stall tucked behind a temple, the warmth felt familiar. No beef. No pork. No rush. Just gentle hands, fresh herbs, and soup that hugged.

🌙 The Night Market Flickered Like a Poem

Imagine dozens of lanterns reflecting on puddles. The scent of sugarcane and grilled bananas. Trinkets you don’t need but want anyway. The Hanoi Night Market wasn’t loud, it was luminous.

📓 I Left Hanoi With:

  • A prayer scroll handwritten by an artist at the Temple of Literature

  • Tons of Vietnamese coffee (in all the different flavors)

  • Dozens of souvenirs & gifts for friends & family

  • My heart a little fuller
